Happy Birthday!

The European Union was born on March 27th 1957. There were six founder countries: Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The treaty creating the European Community (EC) was signed in Rome. The candles will be lit on the Treaty of Rome’s 50th birthday cake in Berlin. (Germany holds the presidency of the EU for the 6 months from January 2007).

After 50 years, the EC has become the EU. There are now 27 countries where they fly the same blue flag with its 12 stars.
